Founder Spotlight: Michael Beiro - Building Safer Utilities Through Innovation

Michael Beiro has always been driven by solving complex engineering challenges. Today, as Founder and CEO of Linebird, he is helping utilities rethink one of the industry's most dangerous jobs by developing technology that keeps lineworkers safer while improving the way critical infrastructure is maintained.

With a background in mechanical engineering, robotics, UAV systems, sensors, and advanced manufacturing, Michael founded Linebird with a clear vision: technology should augment skilled utility crews, not replace them. By equipping commercially available industrial drones with patented non-conductive payloads and specialized tools, Linebird enables utilities to perform live-line measurements, debris removal, conductor cutting, and other maintenance tasks while reducing worker exposure to energized infrastructure.

The idea for Linebird began with a challenge from one of the largest electric utilities in the United States. The utility wanted to know whether a drone could safely take a contact measurement on an energized power line, eliminating the need to send a worker by helicopter. To tackle the problem, Michael partnered with Lee Corbin, an aerial lineman and former utility drone fleet operator whose firsthand experience complemented Michael's engineering expertise. Together, they developed the concept that became the foundation of Linebird's first patent, creating a safe, non-conductive way for commercially available industrial drones to interact directly with high-voltage infrastructure.

That innovation became Linebird's Osprey Non-conductive Payload System. Michael often describes the company's approach as a "drill and drill bit" model: the Osprey (suspended over power lines by an  industrial drone) is the platform, while specialized tools that fit into the Osprey enable utilities to perform a growing range of maintenance tasks. This philosophy has also shaped Linebird's approach to adoption. The goal is not automation for its own sake, but equipping experienced lineworkers with safer tools that help them work more efficiently and access infrastructure that is difficult, dangerous, or costly to reach.

Since launching its first utility pilots in 2023, Michael has led Linebird from an engineering concept to a growing commercial business serving utilities and channel partners across North America, Europe, and Oceania.
