Beyond the Charger: Building a Smarter, More Connected EV Ecosystem

Elocity is Building a Smarter, More Connected EV Ecosystem

The EV charging market is becoming increasingly crowded, with companies taking very different approaches. Some focus primarily on software and rely on third-party hardware, while others pursue vertically integrated models that control both charging hardware and network operations.

Elocity is taking a different approach that combines the advantages of both.

The company develops its own smart charging hardware and software while maintaining an open, interoperable architecture. Its HIEV platform is OCPP-certified and designed to work across more than 50 charger models, giving customers flexibility to integrate different charging equipment rather than being tied to a single hardware ecosystem.

That flexibility matters. The Open Charge Alliance explains that OCPP provides a standardized communication method between charging stations and central systems regardless of vendor, enabling interoperability and helping avoid integration issues. The organization also notes that OCPP can reduce dependence on proprietary systems and support the ability to change charging network providers without replacing existing charging stations.

Proprietary technology without the lock-in

Elocity's differentiation is not simply that its platform is open. It is that the company combines open interoperability with proprietary technology.

Its smart charging hardware incorporates intelligent load management and power sharing, while HIEV provides centralized management of charging infrastructure and energy use. Customers can therefore access an integrated technology solution while retaining the flexibility to work with compatible third-party equipment.

This is increasingly relevant as charging infrastructure scales. The Open Charge Alliance's certification program notes that OCPP certification can reduce integration risk and support more reliable multi-vendor deployments.

Elocity also manages the energy system

Elocity also goes beyond the traditional charging-network model with a focus on smart energy management.

Its technology supports dynamic load management and grid-aware charging, capabilities that become increasingly important as EV adoption grows. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that smart charge management can reduce costly electrical upgrades, lower charging costs by avoiding peak demand, optimize fleet operations and integrate EV charging with renewable energy and other distributed energy resources.

The DOE also identifies vehicle-to-grid capabilities and managed charging as tools for coordinating EVs, buildings and the grid. Elocity is building toward this broader energy ecosystem, with capabilities including smart load management, EV telematics and V2G integration.

Why Strategic Ventures is engaging with Elocity

Elocity reflects our focus on impact companies combining proprietary technology with a clear market need and potential for scale. What differentiates Elocity is its ability to bridge two models: the technology ownership of a full-stack provider and the flexibility of an open platform. As EV charging evolves from simply adding more chargers to intelligently managing energy across vehicles, buildings and the grid, that combination will become increasingly important.
