Strategic Ventures Impact Insights: September 2024 (Volume 2, Number 6)

WAVE has just completed the first close of their round

WAVE has just completed the first close of a funding round led by Launchpad Venture Group.

WAVE is a prime example of Strategic Ventures' strategy in action: we helped raise capital and are still deeply involved with the company, focusing on marketing strategies, accelerating traction, and scaling efforts. Although WAVE has made significant strides, our team remains actively engaged to ensure continued growth and success.

The funding is being used to scale operations to meet market demand and accelerate marketing and sales efforts. Those efforts are already showing progress with several large customer opportunities. One of those is extending WAVE's strong position in Tennessee, where 9 systems are currently deployed. The State of Tennessee Health Department is providing funding to put WAVE systems in additional YMCA pools in the state, with the potential to extend further.

WAVE’s drowning prevention systems are now protecting thousands of swimmers in 27 states in the US, as well as abroad, including YMCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs of America. With projected revenues of $3.9 million in 2024 and $13 million in 2025, WAVE is poised for significant growth.

Anyone Can Drown: No One Should

Key facts

  • Drowning is the third-leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths

  • There are an estimated 236,000 annual drowning deaths worldwide

  • Global estimates may significantly underestimate the actual public health problem related to drowning

  • Children, males, and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States and the second leading cause of death by accidental injury for children 5 to 14. Red Cross surveys show many Americans lack basic swimming skills. Even with over 10 million private pools and over 350,000 commercial pools, many people still lack access to water safety education and places to learn to swim. Drowning is often seen as a private issue and swimming as a luxury: this perception must change in order to prevent needless drownings and save lives.

Preventive actions include controlling water access, covering wells, using barriers, fencing pools, enhanced education and training programs, and improved safety technology. Supervised childcare for young children, and teaching school-aged children basic swimming and water safety skills are effective strategies, but these efforts should be done with a focus on safety, using tested programs, new drowning prevention technologies, safe areas, and appropriate instructor ratios.

AKOS has commissioned its mobile wellsite office in Alberta and will conduct its first Canadian well intervention services within the next two weeks. Service rates and job programs have been finalized with three operating companies (Spur Petroleum, Obsidian Energy, and Battle River Energy) for the first 26 laterals to be cleaned.

AKOS’ advanced, proprietary well intervention and drilling services deliver significantly improved (1.4Mmt of CO2 reduction as of direct result of AKOS' Cybercoil services in 2028 and enable 90Mmt of CO2 reduction in 2028) sustainability, reduced environmental impact, and far superior economics to operating companies in the energy sector.

Splash has developed Hydrocycle, a patented system for recycling wastewater initially designed for car wash operators. Its potential extends to light industry and other commercial applications. Hydrocycle effectively cuts costs, saves time, and minimizes environmental impact.

  • Splash currently holds two Chinese carwash recycling patents for Hydrocycle, with a third patent in progress for carwash recycling in Europe

  • Existing orders total US $188K, including US $28K from a major Swiss company and an additional US $160K from the subsidiary of a major medical waste systems firm

  • Gross profit margins exceed 50%

In addition, Splash continues to exceed operational milestones:

  • Splash achieved a major milestone, reaching its 1,000,000th car wash this August

  • Leading up to the rainy season, Splash's overall wash volumes were down only 21%, a major improvement over last year's 48% drop; customers continue to make Splash an important part of their everyday car care, and continue to increase their usage of the platform
